The face of Paul Kruger, the fifth and last president of the old South African Republic, is known by many South Africans as the face of the Krugerrand; the South African gold coin, which was first minted in 1967 in order to help fuel the South African gold market.  The Krugerrand can actually be used as legal tender in South Africa, but is commonly not.

The Krugerrand was originally sold at a 5% premium over current spot gold prices, and was made in one size.  Today however, Krugerrands can be found in many different sizes.  Premium over spot gold has also been reduced to a common value of around 1% or less over spot gold.

Today, coin collectors worldwide will collect the Krugerrand gold coin.  The word “Kruggerrand” is actually a registered trademark and owned by Rand Refinery Ltd. The popularity of the South African Krugerrand gold coin has led other countries such as Canada to mint their own bullion coins.
