The first .9999 fine 24-karat gold coins ever struck by the United States mint, were the American Buffalo 24-Karat gold coins. The American Buffalo gold coins were first authorized for production on December 22, 2005. This is also known as the presidential one dollar coin act. American sculptor James Earle Fraser, prepared the images now seen on the obverse and reverse sides of this fantastic gold coin.
These coins are legal tender and backed by the United States government. All $50 24-karat American Buffalo gold coins are struck at the United States mint at West Point.
