2008 Beijing Games 10 Kilo Olympic Gold Coin from China

I recently saw one of the 2008 Beijing Games 10 Kilo Olympic Gold Coins up for auction on Ebay.  The winner paid the nice price of $285,000 for this spectacular collector’s gold coin from China.

It’s rare to find a commemorative priced as low as its bullion value. Often collectors will pay premiums for a commemorative coin based on it’s scarcity, and it’s bullion value. There have only been 29 of these Beijing Olympic gold coins minted worldwide, making this gold coin serial no. 21 fairly scarce.

At a weight of 22 pounds, and diameter of 7.09 inches, this is the largest Gold coin to come out of China.  It’s made from .9999 fine Gold, which at Spot gold prices currently around $800 per ounce, make this equivalent to $285,000 in bullion.  It looks like that eBay winner paid a good price.

One item that makes this gold piece special and unique is how it was cast.  While a few gold coins larger than this have been cast (poured into a mold), the Olympic 10 Kilo has been struck on a massive multi-thousand ton press.  As a result, it has a full Gem Proof finish, with shimmering reflective mirror fields against the cameo frosted designs.
