2014 Baseball Hall of Fame Gold & Silver Commemorative Coins Sell Out

The United States Mint began selling six versions of the 2014 Baseball Hall of Fame coin on March 27, 2014. The one dollar variety came in silver uncirculated and silver proof versions. Gold was also available in uncirculated and proof finishes. The fourth and fifth versions were uncirculated and proof clad coins.

Here's some eye candy for five of the versions.

These coins have been curved so that they resemble the shapes of a Baseball and glove. With the combination of Baseball, a uniquely curved coin and affordable pricing, it's not surprising that the gold and silver versions sold out quickly. It only took one day for the gold coins to disappear and 13 days for the silver versions.

A total of 50,000 units was available for the five dollar denominated gold coins. They quickly sold out and began commanding prices in the $700 range on eBay. Initial prices were $424.75 for the 2014 National Baseball Hall of Fame Proof $5 Gold Coin (B31) and $419.75 for the 2014 National Baseball Hall of Fame Uncirculated $5 Gold Coin (B32.)

400,000 units was set as the maximum mintage for the combination of silver proof and uncirculated dollar coins. Pricing was $51.95 for the 2014 National Baseball Hall of Fame Proof Silver Dollar (B33) and $47.95 for the 2014 National Baseball Hall of Fame Uncirculated Silver Dollar (B34.) On Wednesday, April 9, 2014, the Mint declared a sellout for these two versions. 400,000 units had been sold. EBay sales for the coins range in price from the $65 range to the high $80 range, and presales for graded coins have sold in the amounts of $129 for a PF69 NGC proof and over $200 for a PF70 NGC Proof.

The last two versions available are the 2014 National Baseball Hall of Fame Proof Clad Half-Dollar (B35) and the 2014 National Baseball Hall of Fame Uncirculated Clad Half-Dollar (B36.) As of this writing, these two versions of the 2014 Baseball Hall of Fame coins are still available. Priced at $19.95 for the proof and $18.95 for the uncirculated, they have maximum mintage of 700,000 combined units.

2012 Australian Year of the Dragon Silver Proof High Relief Coin

Coin collectors rushed to the Perth Mint website yesterday to buy the newest release - the 2012 Australian Year of the Dragon Silver Proof High Relief Coin, which is part of the Australian Lunar Series II. Within five hours, the coins had become unavailable.

2012 Australian Year of the Dragon Silver Proof High Relief Coin

2012 is the Year of the Dragon. 12 birth emblems, the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig, represent the 12 Earthly Branches for reckoning time in some Asian cultures. Those born in the corresponding year, are said to carry traits of their corresponding animal. Characteristics for those born in the Year of the Dragon include bravery, passion, and a quick temperament.

The Perth Mint has already released a few other coins depicting the image of the Dragon on the reverse side. This Silver proof high relief coin is created with concave surfaces, which allows an optimum strike on the coin, giving it a high relief imprint of the images.

The reverse image has the words "Year of the Dragon", placed underneath, and the image is that of a mythical Dragon, with a pearl of wisdom.

The obverse image features Queen Elizabeth II. The inscriptions,"Elizabeth II", "Australia", "2012", "1 Dollar", and "1oz 999 Silver", are circled around the Queen's image.

Each coin has a diameter of 32.6 mm, a thickness of 6 mm, and comes in at 1 ounce of .999 Silver. A limited mintage of 7,500 coins has been set for this high relief Silver proof coin.

I was fortunate to have added the 2012 Australian Year of the Dragon Silver Proof High Relief coin to my coin collecting stash. Here's a video of my coin.
