On October 27, 2011 the United States Mint sold one of their most popular products to date; the 2011 25th Anniversary Silver Eagle Set (A25) . Sales began at 12 noon Eastern standard Time, and just 4.5 hours later, the Mint posted a notice that all orders after that point would be put on a waiting list. Shortly after that message, customers were notified that all 25th Anniversary sets had been sold out. A product limit of five sets per household helped to increase the quick sales, as many of the orders placed were for the maximum number of sets allowed.
The 20th Anniversary Silver Eagle Set took over two months to sell out in 2006, and had a mintage of 250,000 sets produced. The 25th Anniversary American Silver Eagle Set was set to a product limit of 100,000 sets minted.
What makes the 25th Anniversary set unique are two Silver Eagle coins that have never been sold individually, and will become the second lowest minted Silver Eagle coins since the beginning of the program in 1986. At a mintage of 30,125 coins, the rare 1995-W Proof Silver Eagle coin has the lowest number of coins minted.
The American Eagle 25th Anniversary Silver Eagle Set contains five coins in total:
2011 Proof Silver Eagle - W Mint Mark
2011 Uncirculated Silver Eagle - W Mint Mark
2011 Uncirculated Silver Eagle - S Mint Mark
2011 Reverse Proof Silver Eagle - P Mint Mark
2011 Silver Eagle bullion coin - No Mint Mark
The Anniversary sets are packaged and presented in hardwood presentation cases. A certificate of authenticity accompanies each individual set.
Spot silver on October 27, 2011 was trading around an average price of $34. The sets contained five coins, at 1 ounce of silver each, or a spot price of $170. The US Mint sold each set for $299.95. Presales of this popular set soon hit the Internet at secondary market selling sites such as eBay, where the prices of an individual set soon were selling for double and range from $600-$750 per set. This writer even saw some individual sets going for a price of $1500! Five set lots were common, and being sold for anywhere from $2800-$3900.
2011 saw many Silver products go on sale by the mint. The America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin program kept coin collectors busy with eight offerings alone. Many coin collectors knew that the 25th Anniversary Silver Eagle sets would be popular, but it's doubtful anyone expected such a fast sellout.
