2011-W Proof Silver Eagle Coin

The United States Mint has posted a "sold out" notice on their website for the 2011-W American Silver Eagle Proof Coin. This collector's coin was available for almost 5 months directly from the mint. It went on sale June 30, 2011.

This news comes as a surprise. The holiday season is often a time when Proof Silver Eagle Coins are given as gifts. The Mint recently sent out a holiday mailer which showed the availability of this coin. This writer received that mailer, showing the coins availability, just this week.

Individual sales figures provided by the United States Mint indicate that 850,000 Proof Silver Eagles were sold. A 2011-W Proof Silver Eagle coin was also included in the 25th Anniversary Silver Eagle Coin Set. With that set's mintage of 100,000, the total mintage for Proof Silver Eagles is 950,000 coins.

This year sales will go down as the second-highest since 1986, when the coins were introduced. That year saw the highest sales at 1,446,778 coins. Sales of this popular silver bullion proof coin have seen regular sales in the 700,000 to 800,000 level since 2001, when 746,398 coins were sold. The only year in the 2000s when less than 700,000 coins were sold, was in 2002, with 647,342 coins sold.

In 2010, the 2010-W American Eagle Silver Proof Coin was initially put on sale by the Mint on November 19, 2010. By the end of December of that year, 860,000 of the coins were sold. Most collectors assumed that this popular coin would continue to be sold until late December of this year. The Silver Eagle Proof coin is one of the most sought after numismatic products available from the Mint.
